(The Cadillac tax was originally scheduled to take effect in 2018 but has been delayed twice by legislation, most recently by the Extension of Continuing Appropriations Act of January 2018.) This “Cadillac tax” will equal 40 percent of the value of health benefits exceeding thresholds projected to be $11,200 for single coverage and $30,150 for family coverage in 2022.

The Cadillac tax was enacted as part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which set the tax’s thresholds at $10,200 for single coverage and $27,500 for family coverage in 2018 dollars. The thresholds are set to grow by the consumer price index (CPI) plus 1 percentage point in 2019 and 2020, and by the CPI thereafter.

The Cadillac tax is a 40% excise tax on high cost employer-sponsored health plans. The Cadillac tax begins in 2020, and is being implemented to help curb the costs associated with health care in the United States.
